Is it effective to take anti-inflammatory and bile-promoting tablets for gallstones?
Due to gallstones, I often have trouble sleeping at night. I went to get checked and was told that I have gallstones with inflammation. I'm wondering, is it effective to take anti-inflammatory and bile-promoting tablets for gallstones?
Anti-inflammatory and bile-promoting tablets are a type of traditional Chinese medicine preparation, primarily composed of ingredients such as Andrographis paniculata, Rabdosia serra, and Picrasma quassioides. They have functions of clearing heat, removing dampness, and promoting bile secretion. In cases of mild gallbladder inflammation or bile stasis, these tablets can help alleviate symptoms and promote bile secretion and excretion.
Gallstone formation is related to imbalances in the proportions of cholesterol, bile pigments, and calcium salts in bile. Anti-inflammatory and bile-promoting tablets cannot alter these fundamental factors. Therefore, for existing gallstones, especially larger stones or multiple stones, relying solely on anti-inflammatory and bile-promoting tablets will not dissolve or expel the stones.
Thus, surgical treatment is usually a more effective option for patients with large stones, severe symptoms, or recurrent gallstones. Additionally, anti-inflammatory and bile-promoting tablets contain Picrasma quassioides, and long-term use may have certain effects on liver and kidney function; therefore, long-term dependence on this medication is not recommended.
At the same time, in treating gallstones, patients should also focus on dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes to prevent recurrence of stone formation.
