Disease description:

My child bought a box of Jianwei Xiaoshi tablets and has been taking two pills a day after meals, almost like candy, saying it is good for the stomach and intestines. I would like to ask whether long-term use of this medication could cause any adverse side effects?

Dr. Zhang Xiuhong

Jianwei Xiaoshi Tablets are commonly used traditional Chinese medicine preparations. Their main ingredients include hawthorn, malt, and Liu Shen Qu (fermented medicinal preparation), which function to strengthen the spleen, stimulate appetite, and promote digestion. These tablets are usually used to treat symptoms such as food stagnation and indigestion. Although Jianwei Xiaoshi Tablets are relatively safe, long-term or improper use may lead to certain side effects.

Long-term reliance on Jianwei Xiaoshi Tablets for digestion may weaken the function of the body's own digestive organs, causing dependency on the medication and subsequently affecting the gastrointestinal tract's self-regulating and recovery abilities.

Some ingredients in Jianwei Xiaoshi Tablets, such as hawthorn, contain high levels of acidic substances. Prolonged and excessive use may irritate the gastric mucosa, leading to discomforts such as acid reflux, heartburn, and stomach pain. Moreover, tannic acid in hawthorn can easily form water-insoluble precipitates when reacting with gastric acid, which may increase the risk of developing gastric stones.

To avoid side effects, it is recommended to use the medication properly under a doctor's guidance, following the dosage instructions provided in the product information. Avoid increasing the dosage or prolonging the duration of use by yourself. If any adverse symptoms occur during medication use, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor.
