How to treat ptosis of the stomach with traditional Chinese medicine
I was recently diagnosed with gastric ptosis, presenting symptoms such as stomach distension and abdominal bloating, which worsen after meals. I hope to alleviate these symptoms through treatment with traditional Chinese medicine.

Gastroptosis refers to a condition where the stomach drops to a lower position, even into the pelvic cavity, usually caused by spleen deficiency and sinking of the middle Qi. Clinically, it presents with stomach distension and abdominal bloating, particularly evident after meals, and may also be accompanied by indigestion and constipation. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, gastroptosis is closely related to deficiency of the spleen and stomach and Qi deficiency with sinking Qi.
The herbal formula Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Decoction for Supplementing the Middle and Invigorating Qi) functions to strengthen the middle jiao, invigorate Qi, elevate Yang, and lift the sinking Qi. It is suitable for gastroptosis caused by spleen Qi deficiency and sinking of the middle Qi. For cases classified as disharmony between the liver and stomach, which manifest as distension and discomfort in both hypochondriac regions and abdominal fullness, Chai Hu Shu Gan San combined with Zuo Jin Wan can be used to soothe the liver and harmonize the stomach. Additionally, herbs such as Huang Qi (Astragalus), Dang Shen (Codonopsis), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga), and Chai Hu (Bupleurum) possess the functions of invigorating Qi in the middle jiao, elevating Yang, and lifting the sinking organs.
In daily life, patients should eat small, frequent meals and avoid overeating. Food should be soft and easy to digest, avoiding cold-natured foods to reduce damage to the spleen and stomach. Maintaining a regular lifestyle, avoiding prolonged standing or physical exhaustion, and performing appropriate abdominal massage to promote gastrointestinal motility are also recommended. Strengthening physical exercise, especially exercises that enhance abdominal muscle tone, such as sit-ups, can help improve gastroptosis.
During treatment, patients should schedule regular follow-up visits at the hospital to monitor changes in their condition and adjust treatment plans promptly.
