What are the causes of rib flaring?
After receiving treatment for a rib contusion, a rib flaring issue was discovered. Why is this?
Flared ribs is a condition characterized by an abnormal protrusion of the lower ends of the ribs or the junction between the ribs and the sternum. This condition may be caused by various factors, with common causes including:
1. Genetic factors: Flared ribs may be related to genetic inheritance. If one or both parents have flared ribs, the likelihood of the condition occurring in their offspring increases.
2. Abnormal growth and development: In children and adolescents, rapid bone growth may outpace the development of muscles and ligaments, potentially leading to flared ribs. This is more common during childhood and symptoms typically diminish with age.
3. Malnutrition: Deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin D or calcium can impair normal bone development, resulting in flared ribs.
4. Muscle imbalance: Weakness in the abdominal muscles or excessive tightness in the back muscles may cause abnormalities in the shape of the thoracic cage, leading to flared ribs.
5. Lifestyle habits: Prolonged poor posture, such as kyphosis or slouching, and overeating leading to an enlarged stomach, may contribute to the development of flared ribs.
6. Trauma: If the ribs are struck or injured and do not heal properly due to inadequate realignment and fixation, it may result in a deformity that causes flared ribs.
