How to treat thickened toenails
Recently, I noticed that my toenails have become thicker. I would like to know how to treat thickened toenails.

Thickening of the toenails commonly occurs due to fungal infections such as onychomycosis, or from prolonged pressure or trauma causing nail plate thickening. Treatment varies depending on the underlying cause.
1. Fungal infection: Antifungal medications such as terbinafine or itraconazole may be used. Additionally, traditional Chinese herbal soaks may be beneficial, but attention must be paid to the solution's concentration and medical guidance.
2. Physical factors: Improve footwear choices by selecting well-fitting, breathable shoes and socks, avoiding prolonged pressure or friction. Regularly trim toenails and maintain cleanliness and dryness to prevent reinfection.
3. Nutritional supplementation: Increase intake of foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as proteins, vitamin E, and B-complex vitamins, which can support nail health.
4. Surgical treatment: In specific cases, such as severe fungal infection or congenital thick nail syndrome, surgical intervention may be considered. However, potential surgical risks and the patient's underlying medical conditions should be carefully evaluated.
In addition, maintaining good hygiene practices, wearing breathable and comfortable shoes and socks, and avoiding cross-infection are important. During treatment, patience and persistence are necessary, along with following medical advice for medication use and regular follow-up visits to assess treatment effectiveness.
