Dr. Li Jingxiang

Anal fissure is a common anorectal condition, usually caused by hard or large stools that lead to tearing of the mucosa and skin of the anal canal. Povidone-iodine, a commonly used disinfectant, has broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties and can effectively kill various microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

The skin and mucosa around the anus in patients with anal fissures may already be damaged. Direct application of povidone-iodine may irritate the wound, causing increased pain and discomfort. Therefore, it is best to consult a physician's advice before using povidone-iodine. If its use is appropriate, patients should combine the disinfection with povidone-iodine with other treatment measures, such as dietary adjustments, maintaining bowel regularity, warm sitz baths, and applying medications that promote healing of the fissure.
