The reasons for sleeping with an open mouth may involve multiple factors, mainly including the following:

  1. Lifestyle habits: Some people may unconsciously develop the habit of breathing through the mouth, even when the nasal passages are clear. Over time, this habit may lead to sleeping with the mouth open.
  2. Physical factors: Obese individuals may experience airway obstruction during sleep due to a hypertrophied posterior pharyngeal wall, enlarged soft palate, or a broad tongue, which can result in mouth breathing. Additionally, due to physiological changes such as muscle relaxation and thickened pharyngeal walls, elderly individuals may also sleep with their mouths open.
  3. Improper sleeping posture: Sleeping on one's stomach or sleeping with the head tilted backward can compress the airway, causing breathing difficulties and subsequently leading to mouth breathing during sleep.
  4. Disease-related factors: Nasal conditions such as upper respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis, deviated nasal septum, and nasal polyps, as well as enlarged tonsils or adenoids, may block the nasal passages, preventing effective nasal breathing and necessitating mouth breathing.

If mouth breathing occurs frequently, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation promptly.
