Disease description:

My father has recently been taking Western medicine prescribed by a doctor for hypertension. At the same time, he also received a traditional Chinese herbal prescription from an experienced TCM practitioner to help regulate his overall health, and he hopes to take both treatments concurrently for better therapeutic results. I would like to ask whether traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine can actually be taken together.

Under normal circumstances, it is not recommended to take traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine simultaneously.

TCM contains complex components, and its active ingredients may interact with Western medications, affecting the absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion of the latter, thereby altering the efficacy or toxicity of Western drugs. For example, certain TCMs may affect the activity of liver enzymes, thus influencing the metabolism of Western medications. Additionally, metal ions present in TCM might interact with components of Western medicines, reducing drug absorption in patients. Taking both types of medication together increases the burden on the liver and kidneys and may even lead to abnormal liver or kidney function.

It is not advisable to take TCM and Western medicine together without guidance; such combinations should be taken only under the supervision of a physician or pharmacist. In rare cases, if a physician approves the combined use of TCM and Western medicine due to perceived therapeutic benefits, the medications may be taken together as directed. However, to avoid potential risks, patients should take the two types of medication at separate times.

Generally, it is recommended to take TCM and Western medicine 1–2 hours apart; this can help reduce the likelihood of interactions to some extent. If any discomfort occurs during medication use, medical attention should be sought promptly.
