Does a big belly indicate excessive dampness in the body?
My husband's lower abdomen has been getting bigger recently, and a friend mentioned this might be due to excessive dampness. I'd like to ask the doctor: does having a larger lower abdomen necessarily mean excessive dampness?

Lower abdominal fat refers to fat accumulated in the lower abdomen. Excess dampness in the body may cause a protruding lower abdomen; however, a protruding lower abdomen is not necessarily caused solely by excessive dampness.
Excess dampness can lead to a swollen lower abdomen. When dampness accumulates in the body, it can impair the function of the spleen and stomach, disrupt water metabolism, and cause dampness to accumulate in the body, ultimately leading to abdominal obesity. Prolonged sitting, lack of physical activity, and a preference for greasy or sweet foods can weaken the spleen and stomach and increase internal dampness, thereby contributing to a protruding lower abdomen.
However, there are other causes for a protruding lower abdomen. Long-term inactivity can lead to fat accumulation in the abdominal area; excessive alcohol consumption may lead to alcoholic fatty liver disease, which in turn causes abdominal enlargement. Additionally, certain medical conditions, such as腹water (ascites) or abdominal tumors, also can cause the lower abdomen to swell.
If a protruding lower abdomen is caused by excessive dampness, dietary adjustments can help. Consuming more spleen-strengthening and dampness-resolving foods such as coix seed, fox nuts (Qianshi), and hyacinth beans (Bai Bian Dou) can be beneficial. Moderate exercise, such as jogging or yoga, can promote blood circulation and help eliminate dampness. Traditional Chinese medicine therapies such as moxibustion and cupping also may assist in removing dampness. However, if abdominal swelling is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, or fatigue, it is advisable to seek timely medical evaluation to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
