Dr. Liu Wenmin

Whether or not a wound can come into contact with water after scabbing depends on several factors. If the scab is intact and there are no abnormalities such as redness, swelling, or discharge, it may be acceptable to get the wound wet. However, if there is pus accumulation under the scab, contact with water is not recommended.

If the scab is firmly attached, there are no signs of infection such as redness or discharge around the wound, and the physician confirms adequate healing progress, limited contact with clean water, such as brief showering, may be permissible. However, prolonged soaking or vigorous scrubbing should be avoided to prevent premature detachment of the scab and delay wound healing.

However, if the scab has accumulated pus or fluid, or if the wound is large, deep, or covered by a thin scab, contact with water should be avoided. Moisture may soften the scab, reducing its protective function and increasing the risk of bacterial invasion, which may lead to infection, delay healing, and prolong recovery time.

After contact with water, the wound edges may be gently cleaned with sterile saline or clean water as directed by a physician. Direct soaking or vigorous rubbing should be avoided to prevent scab detachment or infection. In addition, appropriate moisturization can aid wound healing, but mild, non-allergenic products should be selected.

Throughout the wound healing process, regular monitoring of the wound condition is important. Signs of infection such as redness, swelling, discharge, or increased warmth should be observed. If any abnormalities occur, prompt medical attention should be sought, and professional medical advice should be followed for appropriate management.
