Can a cyst disappear on its own?
Last month during a physical examination, I discovered a cyst on my left kidney. My doctor advised me to drink more water. May I ask if this type of cyst can disappear on its own?

In general, physiological cysts or small inflammatory cysts may resolve spontaneously, whereas neoplastic cysts or large cysts with symptoms typically do not disappear on their own.
In women, ovarian physiological cysts formed due to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle may gradually decrease in size and eventually disappear as hormone levels adjust and the menstrual cycle progresses. Additionally, small cysts caused by inflammation might also gradually shrink and ultimately resolve once the body's immune system eliminates the inflammatory factors. The human body possesses a certain capacity for self-repair and regulation; when surrounding tissues such as blood vessels and lymphatics function normally, they can remove the fluid contents of the cyst, causing it to decrease in size and eventually disappear. However, this process is usually slow, and not all cysts will resolve spontaneously.
Neoplastic cysts, formed by abnormal cell proliferation, generally do not resolve spontaneously. The cells within neoplastic cysts have the ability to proliferate continuously, and these cysts may gradually enlarge over time and even potentially transform into malignant tumors. Moreover, certain large cysts with symptoms, such as hepatic or renal cysts, typically persist after formation and may slowly increase in size over time. These cysts may compress surrounding tissues and organs, leading to symptoms such as pain and functional impairment. In such cases, medical intervention is often required, including treatments such as surgical removal or aspiration.
After discovering a cyst, regular physical examinations should be conducted to monitor any changes. If the cyst increases in size or other symptoms develop, prompt medical attention should be sought. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, avoiding additional pressure or irritation to the affected area, and maintaining a positive mental state can help reduce the occurrence and progression of cysts.
