Pregnant women can usually drink suanmei tang (sour plum juice), but should pay attention to moderate consumption.

Suanmei tang is a traditional cooling beverage mainly made from ingredients such as black plums, hawthorn, and osmanthus. It can help alleviate common early pregnancy symptoms like nausea and vomiting, while also stimulating appetite and promoting gastrointestinal motility. Rich in organic acids, vitamin C, and trace elements, moderate consumption of suanmei tang can improve appetite and aid digestion, thereby relieving pregnancy-related loss of appetite to some extent.

Due to its sour taste, excessive consumption of suanmei tang may irritate the gastric mucosa and cause or worsen gastrointestinal discomfort, especially for pregnant women with a history of stomach problems, who should be particularly cautious. Overconsumption may also cause uterine contractions, increasing the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. Commercially available suanmei tang products may contain added sugars, preservatives, and other ingredients, excessive intake of which may be detrimental to blood sugar control and weight management. It is preferable to choose homemade suanmei tang to ensure the hygiene and freshness of the ingredients.

In daily life, leftover suanmei tang should be stored in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage. Before making any dietary adjustments, consult a doctor or nutritionist to ensure the health of both mother and baby.
