I have noticed some keloid scars appearing on my body, which I find quite aesthetically displeasing. I heard that laser therapy can address many skin concerns, so I would like to ask the doctor whether keloid scars can be treated with laser therapy. How effective is laser treatment for this condition?

In general, keloids can be treated with laser therapy.

Keloids are formed due to an abnormal response of the body to inflammation or injury, characterized by excessive proliferation of collagen fibers. They not only affect the smoothness of the skin but also impact appearance, causing significant distress to patients. Laser therapy can be used to treat keloids; however, treatment outcomes may vary from person to person. Laser therapy primarily works on the principle of photothermal action, using specific wavelengths to target the affected area directly. This helps promote collagen remodeling, inhibit excessive growth, and reduce the volume of scar tissue through actions such as cauterization and vaporization of the scar tissue, thereby improving the appearance of the scar. Laser therapy also has certain limitations. For small keloids that are in the early proliferative stage, laser treatment may achieve better results. However, for larger and thicker keloids, laser therapy alone may not completely resolve the issue, and combination with other treatment methods, such as local injection of glucocorticoids or radiotherapy, may be required to achieve better outcomes.

Although laser therapy is effective, it may also cause some side effects, such as redness, pain, and pigmentation. After treatment, following the doctor's instructions for appropriate skin care, avoiding sun exposure, using sunscreen, and keeping the treated area clean can help with recovery and reduce complications.
