Does soda water help treat gout?
Recently, I saw online claims that soda water can treat gout. I would like to ask, is soda water effective for treating gout?
Seltzer water has a certain auxiliary therapeutic effect on gout.
Gout is a metabolic disease caused by hyperuricemia. When the body produces excessive uric acid or excretes insufficient amounts, the level of uric acid in the blood increases, leading to the formation of urate crystals that deposit in joints and surrounding tissues, triggering an inflammatory response and causing acute arthritis attacks, known as gout. Seltzer water, primarily composed of sodium bicarbonate, is alkaline and can neutralize acidic substances in the body. Theoretically, this may help regulate the body's acid-base balance and thereby indirectly influence uric acid metabolism. Moreover, seltzer water can alkalinize urine, increase urine pH, and promote the dissolution and excretion of uric acid in urine, thus indirectly lowering blood uric acid levels. Additionally, the sodium bicarbonate in seltzer water can increase urine output, helping to reduce the retention time of uric acid in the body and further lowering blood uric acid levels. Furthermore, by reducing blood uric acid levels, seltzer water can alleviate symptoms such as joint pain and swelling in patients with gout to some extent.
