
The Efficacy, Functions, and Contraindications of Taxillus (Sang Jisheng)
Recently, a friend gave me some Taxillus (Sang Jisheng). I would like to know, what are the功效 (effects) and禁忌 (contraindications) of Taxillus?

I. Effects and Functions of Taxillus (Sang Jisheng)
1. Eliminates Wind-Damp: Taxillus effectively treats pain caused by wind-damp obstruction, including conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatoid joint inflammation. It alleviates joint pain and swelling by dispelling wind-damp and promoting circulation of the meridians.
2. Nourishes the Liver and Kidneys, Strengthens the Muscles and Bones: Taxillus tonifies the liver and kidneys and strengthens the muscles and bones. It has significant therapeutic effects on symptoms such as yin deficiency of the liver and kidneys, weakness of tendons and bones, and soreness and weakness of the waist and knees. Additionally, it can treat symptoms such as excessive menstrual bleeding and metrorrhagia caused by kidney deficiency in women.
3. Stabilizes Pregnancy: Taxillus also has the function of stabilizing pregnancy and can treat symptoms such as fetal bleeding and restlessness of the fetus caused by deficiency of the liver and kidneys and instability of the Conception and Governing Vessels.
4. Lowers Blood Pressure, Promotes Diuresis: Modern research has found that Taxillus also has certain effects in lowering blood pressure and promoting urination, making it suitable for patients with mild hypertension and edema.
II. Contraindications of Taxillus
1. Contraindicated in Pregnant Women: Due to its blood-activating effect, Taxillus may cause miscarriage or premature birth in pregnant women and should therefore be strictly avoided.
2. Use with Caution in Cases of Yin Deficiency with Fire Hyperactivity: Taxillus has a slightly warm nature and may exacerbate the condition in individuals with yin deficiency and fire hyperactivity; therefore, it should be used cautiously.
3. Contraindicated in Allergic Individuals: People allergic to Taxillus may experience allergic reactions such as rashes and skin itching after use, and should therefore avoid it completely.
4. Use with Caution During Pregnancy: Although Taxillus can help stabilize pregnancy, it should be avoided during the first trimester to prevent unintended complications.
5. Use with Caution in Individuals with Spleen and Stomach Deficiency-Cold: Taxillus has a slightly cold nature and may cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as indigestion and diarrhea when consumed in excess by individuals with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold.
6. Use with Caution in Patients with Hypotension: Due to its blood pressure-lowering effect, patients with hypotension should avoid using Taxillus or take it only under medical supervision.
