Iodine tincture and mercurochrome solution should not be used together.

Iodine tincture is a liquid mixture of iodine and ethanol, primarily used for disinfecting the skin surface. Its antibacterial properties can kill various bacteria, fungi, and viruses. However, iodine tincture can be somewhat irritating to the skin, especially when applied to wounds, potentially causing pain or pigmentation. Mercurochrome solution, whose main component is crystal violet, is also an effective disinfectant commonly used for treating minor skin infections or slight abrasions. In addition to its disinfecting properties, it can form a protective film that reduces the invasion of external bacteria.

However, iodine tincture and mercurochrome solution should not be used together, as they undergo a chemical reaction that produces a toxic substance—mercuric iodide. This substance is harmful to the human body and may cause skin allergies, irritation, or even poisoning. Therefore, in actual practice, applying iodine tincture and mercurochrome solution to the same area simultaneously should be avoided, and any medication should be used under the guidance of a physician.

If disinfection of a wound is necessary, it is recommended to first clean the wound with iodine tincture and wait for it to dry before applying mercurochrome solution or another suitable disinfectant as needed. This approach ensures effective disinfection of the wound while avoiding unnecessary risks of chemical reactions.
