Can people with gout eat Chinese chives?
I am 40 years old this year and have gout. I would like to ask, can I eat Chinese chives with gout?

In general, people with gout can consume leeks, but they should be eaten in moderation. Gout is a disease caused by abnormal uric acid metabolism, primarily manifesting as joint inflammation and pain. When uric acid levels become too high in the body, uric acid salt crystals form and deposit in the joints and surrounding tissues, triggering gout attacks. The purine content in the diet directly affects uric acid levels—high-purine foods such as organ meats, seafood, and red meat should be limited to reduce uric acid production. As a common vegetable, leeks contain abundant nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin E, carotene, and dietary fiber, which help enhance immunity, promote digestion, and provide antioxidant effects. Additionally, leeks have relatively low purine content, making them a suitable food option for individuals with gout.
However, they should be consumed in moderation, as leeks are somewhat pungent and excessive intake may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Patients with gout should also try to avoid or limit intake of high-purine foods such as animal organs, seafood, and legumes in their daily diet. Drinking plenty of water helps with uric acid excretion. Maintaining a balanced diet and consuming adequate amounts of foods rich in vitamins and dietary fiber are also important.
