My wife is currently in the second trimester of pregnancy, but we are unsure about which sleeping positions are suitable at night. Could you please advise what sleeping positions are recommended during the second trimester?

Dr. Zhang Lu

Common sleeping positions during the second trimester of pregnancy include left lateral position, right lateral position, avoiding supine position, semi-recumbent position, and using pillows for support.

1. Left lateral position: This position helps improve the right rotation of the uterus, reduces pressure on the inferior vena cava, increases venous return to the heart, improves circulation, and benefits fetal growth and development.

2. Right lateral position: To some extent, this position also helps relieve the pressure of the uterus on the abdominal aorta and ensures placental blood perfusion.

3. Avoid supine position: As pregnancy progresses and the uterus enlarges, it may compress the inferior vena cava and abdominal aorta, impairing circulation and causing symptoms such as dizziness and palpitations in pregnant women.

4. Semi-recumbent position: Elevating the head of the bed to a certain angle and maintaining a semi-recumbent position can help reduce abdominal pressure and alleviate discomfort during pregnancy.

5. Using pillows for support: If a pregnant woman finds side-lying positions uncomfortable, she can use pillows to adjust her posture.

During the second trimester of pregnancy, the left lateral position should be the primary sleeping posture, supplemented by the right lateral position. Supine and prone positions should be avoided. Additionally, supportive tools such as pillows can be used to improve sleep comfort.
