My child has a fever with a body temperature of 38.5°C. I don't want to give him fever-reducing medication right away. Could you please recommend some effective physical cooling methods?

Generally, a child's fever can be reduced through physical methods such as lukewarm sponge baths, drinking more water, reducing clothing, using fever-reducing patches, and cold compresses.

Use a towel soaked in lukewarm water to gently wipe the child's forehead, armpits, groin, and other areas where large blood vessels are located. The evaporation of water helps remove body heat. However, avoid using cold or ice water, which may cause chills and further increase body temperature. Encourage the child to drink more water or other fluids, such as diluted juice, to replace fluids lost due to fever and to prevent dehydration.

Adjust the child's clothing according to the indoor temperature and their condition. Maintain good indoor air circulation to aid heat dissipation, but also avoid excessive cooling that may make the child feel cold. Fever-reducing patches contain a large amount of water and natural active ingredients. When applied to areas such as the forehead and temples, the evaporation of moisture helps remove body heat. Wrapping ice cubes or wet cloths in a towel and placing them on the child's forehead can also help reduce body temperature as the ice melts and absorbs heat.

During physical cooling, it is recommended to continuously monitor the child's temperature. If high fever persists or physical cooling proves ineffective, seek medical attention promptly, and consider administering fever-reducing medications as needed.
