I am a 25-year-old female. Recently, my face has been feeling consistently oily, and I have developed many pimples. A friend suggested using soap to wash my face for better skin cleansing, but I'm concerned whether this might harm my skin.

Using soap to wash the face is generally not recommended. Soap is typically alkaline, with a pH higher than the skin's natural acidity. Long-term use can disrupt the skin's lipid barrier, leading to moisture loss, dryness, and increased sensitivity. For individuals with oily or acne-prone skin, excessive cleansing may overstimulate the sebaceous glands, causing them to produce more oil and creating a vicious cycle of increased oiliness. Once the skin barrier is compromised, external irritants can more easily penetrate, potentially worsening inflammatory responses and even causing redness or peeling.

It is recommended to choose a gentle facial cleanser based on amino acids or alkyl polyglucosides (APG), with a pH close to the skin's natural environment. These products can effectively remove excess oil without damaging the skin barrier. Face washing frequency should be limited to once in the morning and once in the evening, using lukewarm water close to body temperature. After cleansing, promptly apply moisturizing products, such as lotions or creams containing ceramides or hyaluronic acid, to help restore the skin barrier. Avoid frequently switching cleansers, and during periods of sensitivity, discontinue the use of exfoliating agents or acid-based skincare products until skin condition improves and adjustments can be gradually reintroduced. If significant discomfort occurs, such as redness, stinging, or signs of allergy, discontinue use immediately and consult a dermatologist.
