Can people with high blood sugar eat Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra)?
I am a 45-year-old male. During a recent physical examination, I discovered that my blood sugar levels were elevated, and I am currently adjusting my diet. I really enjoy eating Chinese bayberries (Myrica rubra), but I am unsure whether individuals with high blood sugar can consume them.

People with high blood sugar can consume bayberries in moderation, but should pay attention to controlling the amount. Bayberries are rich in vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber, and have a low glycemic index; moderate consumption will not cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels. The dietary fiber in bayberries helps delay sugar absorption, thereby preventing sharp increases in blood glucose. However, total carbohydrate intake should still be counted within the daily diet plan, as excessive consumption may cause temporary blood sugar elevation. Moreover, bayberries have relatively high sugar content; consuming excessive amounts at once may impact blood sugar control.
To better manage blood sugar levels, it is recommended to include bayberries within the daily total fruit intake and consume them together with other low-sugar fruits. Each serving of bayberries should be limited to a small bowl, approximately 100 grams or less, to avoid excessive sugar intake. Avoid canned or sugared bayberry products, choosing fresh or frozen unsweetened varieties instead. In daily diets, more low-sugar fruits such as strawberries and grapefruit can be selected, while reducing intake of refined sugars and high-calorie foods. Maintaining a regular exercise routine can help improve insulin sensitivity and further stabilize blood sugar levels.
