What does it mean when a child coughs up green phlegm?
My child has been coughing constantly for the past few days and is even coughing up green phlegm. I would like to ask about the cause of green phlegm in children with cough.
Green phlegm in children's cough may be caused by bronchitis or could be a sign of pneumonia. If it is caused by bronchitis, parents can administer azithromycin granules (an antibiotic) to the child under a doctor's guidance. Additionally, cough-suppressing and phlegm-resolving medications, such as ambroxol hydrochloride oral solution, may be used as adjunctive treatment. If the condition is due to pneumonia, medications such as cefixime granules and citrus red granules may be used for treatment. However, please note that cefixime granules are recommended for children above six months of age.
