After a child is bitten by mosquitoes or insects and develops large swellings, desonide cream can be applied externally to reduce swelling. Desonide cream has certain anti-inflammatory and swelling-reducing effects. If the swelling and redness are accompanied by fever, or the scratched area becomes excessively large, oral antihistamine medications are needed, such as loratadine syrup or cetirizine oral solution. Because children have thin and tender skin, allergic reactions may be relatively intense and are often accompanied by significant itching. Scratching can easily lead to crusting, erosion, and even potentially trigger a generalized eczema outbreak. If the number of bites is limited, topical medications such as Eloson (mometasone furoate) ointment can be considered initially. However, if there are numerous bites or systemic allergic reactions are triggered, oral antihistamines such as cetirizine or loratadine must be administered.
