In general, rhinitis may cause itchy eyes.

The nasal cavity and the eye are connected through structures such as the nasolacrimal duct. When rhinitis occurs, inflammatory factors and allergens may spread to the eyes through these passages, irritating ocular tissues and causing discomfort symptoms such as itchy eyes. During rhinitis episodes, the nasal mucosa becomes congested and swollen, and the inflammatory response produces a large amount of inflammatory mediators, such as histamine and leukotrienes. These inflammatory mediators can enter the eye via fluid flow within the nasolacrimal duct, irritating ocular tissues such as the conjunctiva, leading to symptoms including ocular itching, redness, and swelling.

Allergic rhinitis is a common type of rhinitis that causes itchy eyes. During allergy seasons, allergens such as pollen and dust mites enter the nasal cavity, activating the immune system and triggering allergic reactions in the nasal passages. Due to the anatomical connection between the eyes and nasal cavity, allergens can also irritate the eyes, causing allergic conjunctivitis, which results in symptoms such as itchy eyes, tearing, and redness.

If symptoms of itchy eyes caused by rhinitis persist or worsen, prompt medical attention is recommended to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Rubbing the eyes can further irritate ocular tissues and worsen symptoms; therefore, eye rubbing should be avoided, and ocular hygiene should be maintained. Engaging in appropriate outdoor exercise to strengthen physical health and improve nasal blood circulation may help alleviate symptoms of rhinitis.
