Can rhinitis cause tinnitus?
I am 24 years old and have rhinitis. Recently, I occasionally experience brief episodes of tinnitus. I would like to know whether rhinitis can cause tinnitus?

In general, rhinitis may cause tinnitus.
During rhinitis, the nasal mucosa experiences inflammatory reactions such as congestion and swelling, which may affect the Eustachian tube, causing its mucosa to swell and leading to functional impairment. The Eustachian tube is a passage that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx and normally maintains pressure equilibrium between the middle ear and the outside environment. When the Eustachian tube functions abnormally, the air pressure within the middle ear becomes unbalanced, which can cause tinnitus.
Inflammation caused by rhinitis may spread through the Eustachian tube to the middle ear, causing otitis media. Middle ear inflammation can irritate nerves and tissues within the middle ear, affecting the normal conduction and perception of sound, thereby leading to tinnitus. Rhinitis may also trigger nasal inflammation that extends to the ear, resulting in ear infection or inflammation, which can also cause tinnitus. Nasal congestion caused by rhinitis can affect airflow and impair hearing to some extent, creating a sensation of tinnitus.
Tinnitus caused by rhinitis is usually temporary and typically subsides gradually as the rhinitis is treated and resolved. The sound of tinnitus may manifest as a low-pitched roaring or other abnormal noises. It is recommended to implement appropriate treatment measures according to the type and symptoms of rhinitis, such as using nasal corticosteroids, decongestants, or antiallergic medications. Keeping the nasal passages clear through nasal irrigation and the use of nasal sprays can help alleviate tinnitus symptoms. If tinnitus persists or worsens, it is advisable to seek timely medical attention for a comprehensive ear examination and evaluation to determine the exact cause and implement appropriate treatment measures.
