Dr. Zhang Lu

In general, pregnant women can eat lychee, but should do so in moderation.

Lychee is rich in sugars such as glucose and sucrose, which can provide energy for pregnant women. It also contains abundant vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and iron. Vitamin C can enhance the pregnant woman's immunity and promote iron absorption; B-complex vitamins help maintain normal metabolism; and iron can help prevent iron-deficiency anemia.

Lychee's sweet taste and appealing aroma can stimulate appetite and increase food intake for pregnant women who experience poor appetite during pregnancy. However, it should be consumed in moderation. Lychee is warm in nature, and excessive consumption may cause internal heat, leading to symptoms such as dry mouth, sore throat, and swollen throat. Additionally, lychee has a high sugar content, and excessive intake may rapidly raise blood glucose levels, increasing the risk of gestational diabetes, and may also lead to excessive weight gain, which can affect maternal and fetal health.

If a pregnant woman already has gestational diabetes, unstable blood sugar control, or symptoms such as internal heat or constipation, she should eat lychee sparingly or avoid it altogether to prevent worsening of her condition. After consuming lychee, pregnant women should pay attention to their body's response, and if discomfort occurs, they should adjust their diet promptly and consult a doctor.
