GBS testing checks for Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection in the body. A positive GBS test result typically indicates colonization or infection with Group B Streptococcus—not a viral infection. GBS infection may lead to conditions such as meningitis or sepsis in newborns, but it is not associated with viral infections or polyradiculoneuritis (e.g., Guillain-Barré syndrome). If a patient develops polyradiculoneuritis, it is usually linked to other triggers—such as certain viral or bacterial infections (e.g., Campylobacter jejuni, Epstein-Barr virus, or cytomegalovirus)—not GBS. Patients should promptly consult their physician for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, which may include supportive care or immunomodulatory therapies (e.g., intravenous immunoglobulin or plasma exchange), depending on the underlying cause. Regular follow-up visits to the hospital are essential during treatment, and maintaining a positive mental outlook is also beneficial.
