Cerebral palsy in children is most commonly caused by viral infection of the brain during embryonic development; it may also result from genetic factors or, less commonly, from severe cerebral hypoxia during childbirth leading to damage of neurons or brain cells. Cerebral palsy is largely irreversible, and currently no specific treatment can completely cure it. Affected individuals typically exhibit limited limb mobility, as well as markedly delayed development of speech and motor skills.
