Dr. Zhang Xianguang
A needlestick injury refers to tissue damage caused by penetration of the body with a metallic needle or similar sharp object. When a patient sustains a needlestick injury, the affected area should be carefully examined to determine the needle’s length and cleanliness. If the needle is contaminated, infection is highly likely. Moreover, if the needle tract traverses a blood vessel, significant hemorrhage may occur; if it enters the peritoneal cavity, intraperitoneal bleeding and infection may result. Therefore, prompt medical evaluation is essential following any needlestick injury.
