Elevated carbohydrate antigen 72-4 (CA72-4) levels may indicate various conditions: 1. **Non-pathological factors**: Improper diet—such as prolonged consumption of greasy or hard-to-digest foods—or excessive alcohol intake can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to elevated CA72-4 levels. Additionally, certain medications—including colchicine tablets and ibuprofen sustained-release capsules—may irritate the gastric mucosa, causing transient increases in CA72-4. 2. **Pathological factors**: Elevated CA72-4 may also be associated with diseases, including gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., gastritis, gastric ulcers, pancreatitis) and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Notably, markedly elevated CA72-4 is an important warning sign for malignancies—particularly gastric cancer. A CA72-4 level several-fold higher than the upper limit of normal warrants heightened clinical suspicion for malignancy.
