Antihypertensive Mechanism of Clonidine
Disease description:
My grandfather has hypertension, so I would like to know: What is the antihypertensive mechanism of clonidine?
Clonidine: This is a centrally acting antihypertensive agent that primarily exerts its blood pressure–lowering effect by inhibiting central nervous system activity. Long-term use may reduce neuronal activity in the brain; however, once effective, clonidine is associated with minimal rebound hypertension, making it suitable for elderly patients with hypertension. Clonidine should be taken after meals, as it can irritate the gastric mucosa; administration on an empty stomach may increase the risk of gastric ulcer formation.
