What does a “+” (positive) result for ketones in a fasting urine test mean?
Disease description:
I noticed a “+” sign on my urinalysis report, but I’m unsure what it means. What does a “+” for ketones in a fasting urine test indicate?
A urine ketone test showing “+” (one plus sign) on an empty stomach typically indicates an underlying disease, such as diabetes. In individuals with diabetes, ketonuria may appear during routine urinalysis—most commonly due to elevated blood glucose levels. Some patients may also experience nausea and vomiting, while others may report generalized fatigue. Treatment may include insulin injection.
