Individuals with diabetes must strictly adhere to standardized procedures when performing self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) to ensure result accuracy. Patients should be familiar with the recommended frequency of blood glucose testing and develop a personalized monitoring schedule—measuring either daily or weekly, as appropriate. Selecting appropriate testing times is also critical; generally, measurements are advised before and after each of the three main meals and at bedtime. Additional measurements should be performed promptly whenever symptoms of discomfort arise. Prior to blood collection, the fingertip must be disinfected—75% alcohol is preferred—and the skin should be allowed to air-dry completely. Blood should be collected from the lateral aspects of the fingertip pad—not the fingertip itself—to minimize tissue injury and discomfort. Finally, after blood collection, wait for the glucose meter’s prompt before applying the blood drop onto the test strip; do not smear the blood directly, to ensure accurate meter readings.
