Introduction
Foods that patients with thyroid nodules should generally avoid include those high in iodine, spicy or irritating foods, raw/cold or greasy foods, and pickled or moldy foods. 1. Iodine-rich foods: e.g., laver (nori), kelp, dried shrimp, and hairtail fish. Patients with hyperthyroidism should avoid these, as such foods may trigger enlargement of thyroid nodules and thereby worsen the condition. Patients with hypothyroidism, however, may consume them in moderation.

Over the past few days, I noticed a small lump on my neck and went to the hospital for evaluation. The diagnosis was thyroid nodule, and my doctor has already prescribed medication for treatment. What foods should be avoided by individuals with thyroid nodules?

Foods to Avoid with Thyroid Nodules

Patients with thyroid nodules should generally avoid foods high in iodine, spicy or irritating foods, raw/cold or greasy foods, and pickled or moldy foods. 1. High-iodine foods: such as seaweed, kelp, dried shrimp, and hairtail. These should be avoided by patients with hyperthyroidism, as excessive iodine intake may stimulate nodule growth and worsen the condition. Patients with hypothyroidism, however, may consume these foods in moderation. 2. Irritating foods: such as chili peppers, scallions, black pepper, garlic, mustard, tea, and alcohol. These can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, potentially causing abdominal pain and other discomforts—exacerbating patient suffering and possibly interfering with therapeutic efficacy.

Raw and cold foods—such as ice cream and chilled beverages—should also be avoided. Excessive consumption may irritate the gastrointestinal tract and interfere with treatment. Additionally, pickled foods—including salted vegetables, kimchi, and fermented cabbage—should be limited. These contain relatively high levels of nitrites, and long-term consumption may pose health risks. Patients with thyroid nodules should minimize their intake.

Moreover, patients with thyroid disorders should focus on maintaining balanced nutrition in daily life. Moderate intake of high-protein foods—such as eggs and milk—is recommended. Abstaining from unhealthy habits like smoking and alcohol consumption can also support disease recovery. We hope this information is helpful to you!
