Methods to Alleviate Pain from Periarthritis of the Shoulder
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is an extremely painful condition; many patients experience severe, distressing pain—sometimes excruciatingly so. So, what are the methods for relieving frozen shoulder pain?
Methods for Relieving Frozen Shoulder Pain
If a patient has frozen shoulder, one recommended method is the “sling technique”: using a triangular sling to suspend the affected forearm, allowing the shoulder joint to hang naturally while maintaining elbow flexion and positioning the wrist in a relaxed, neutral posture. This restricts upper-limb movement. If pain subsides, the sling may be removed.

Patients may also apply cold therapy—for example, purchasing an appropriate ice pack from a supermarket or preparing a homemade cold pack by placing ice cubes and saline solution into a plastic bag, then applying it directly to the painful area of the shoulder joint. This can significantly alleviate pain within a short time. Alternatively, patients may use heat therapy: soaking a towel in warm water (~45°C), wringing it out, and applying it as a warm compress over the shoulder to concentrate heat on the painful region, thereby easing symptoms.

Note: The water temperature must be moderate—avoid excessively hot water to prevent skin burns. It should be emphasized that these measures provide only symptomatic relief and cannot fully cure the condition. For definitive treatment, patients must seek professional care from a reputable orthopedic specialist and undergo systematic, evidence-based therapy. We hope this information proves helpful!
