Introduction
Early symptoms of astigmatism include blurred vision, double shadows, photophobia, reluctance to open the eyes in bright light, excessive tearing, eye soreness, eye swelling, periorbital discomfort, and even forehead tightness. The primary cause of astigmatism is suboptimal development of the eyeball during growth. Astigmatism is classified into myopic astigmatism and hyperopic astigmatism. Symptoms of hyperopic astigmatism—particularly those induced by visual fatigue—are especially pronounced.

One of the early symptoms of astigmatism is decreased visual acuity—objects appear blurry both at a distance and up close. Some patients experience visual fatigue early on. If astigmatism affects both eyes and the degree or axis of astigmatism is asymmetric, abnormal head or eye positioning may occur. So, what are the early symptoms of astigmatism?

Early Symptoms of Astigmatism

Early symptoms of astigmatism include blurred vision, double or ghost images, photophobia (light sensitivity), reluctance to open the eyes in bright light, excessive tearing, ocular soreness or burning, eye swelling, periorbital discomfort, and even forehead tightness. The primary cause of astigmatism is suboptimal development of the eyeball during growth. Astigmatism is classified into myopic astigmatism and hyperopic astigmatism. Symptoms of hyperopic astigmatism—particularly those related to visual fatigue—are especially prominent; they tend to worsen significantly when individuals spend prolonged periods focusing on computers or smartphones at close range. At such times, resting the eyes and using ophthalmic medications—such as digoxin diphenylamine eye drops—under a physician’s guidance may help alleviate visual fatigue. However, the most fundamental solution is to undergo a professional refraction examination at a hospital and wear appropriately prescribed toric (astigmatism-correcting) eyeglasses.

Most patients with astigmatism experience eye fatigue, eye swelling, and tearing; some may also suffer headaches, nausea, or vomiting. Because astigmatism creates dual focal points, images appear blurred, requiring continuous fine-tuning by the eye muscles. When viewing objects, distortion occurs easily, leading readily to visual fatigue.

It is advisable to increase intake of vitamins and protein, as these nutrients support ocular health. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
