Is it acceptable to leave phimosis untreated?
Patients with phimosis are generally advised to undergo surgical intervention promptly. However, not all individuals with redundant prepuce require circumcision. Circumcision is indicated only in adults who continue to experience persistent phimosis.
Circumcision is specifically recommended for patients with phimosis complicated by recurrent balanoposthitis—i.e., repeated inflammation of the preputial inner surface and glans penis due to chronic irritation. Conversely, if the foreskin can be easily retracted manually to fully expose the glans without any history of balanoposthitis, surgical intervention is unnecessary.

Failure to address severe phimosis surgically may lead to complications, including urinary or ejaculatory dysfunction—particularly in cases of severe phimosis; discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse, or inability to engage in sexual activity; increased risk of recurrent balanoposthitis; elevated risk of penile cancer; and potential psychological distress.
Men should cultivate good hygiene habits, including regular bathing and frequent changing of undergarments, to effectively minimize bacterial proliferation. Engaging in appropriate physical exercise helps enhance overall immunity. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule supports endocrine balance and helps prevent fatigue and lethargy.
