Introduction
Early symptoms of finger arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling—the initial signs of the condition. In the early stages of finger arthritis, many patients experience finger stiffness and find it difficult to make a fist. Some patients may develop trigger finger, where the affected finger bends easily but cannot be straightened smoothly afterward, requiring external force to extend the previously bent finger.

Finger arthritis is a common condition among older adults and is closely associated with immune system dysfunction. It can severely impair daily functioning, and if left untreated over time, may lead to other complications—such as synovial arthritis—which are notoriously difficult to cure. Typically, patients rely on anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications to alleviate symptoms. So, what are the early signs of finger arthritis?

Early Symptoms of Finger Arthritis

Early manifestations of finger arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling—often the first noticeable symptoms. In the initial stages, many patients experience finger stiffness and find it difficult to make a fist. Some individuals develop “trigger finger,” characterized by difficulty straightening the finger after flexion, requiring external force to extend the previously bent digit—this is an early sign of finger osteoarthritis.

Patients with finger arthritis may opt for pharmacological treatment to relieve symptoms. Currently, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs)—such as methotrexate and sulfasalazine—are commonly prescribed. Corticosteroids may be used when necessary to control inflammation, although long-term use is generally discouraged. Physical therapy options include topical applications, sand-bath therapy, phototherapy (sunlight exposure), and steam therapy.

Adequate rest and joint protection are essential; excessive or overly strenuous activity may exacerbate local symptoms. If symptoms worsen, prompt medical evaluation is advised, and medications should always be used under a physician’s guidance. We hope this information is helpful to you.
