Early manifestations of finger arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling—often the first noticeable symptoms. In the initial stages, many patients experience finger stiffness and find it difficult to make a fist. Some individuals develop “trigger finger,” characterized by difficulty straightening the finger after flexion, requiring external force to extend the previously bent digit—this is an early sign of finger osteoarthritis.
Patients with finger arthritis may opt for pharmacological treatment to relieve symptoms. Currently, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs)—such as methotrexate and sulfasalazine—are commonly prescribed. Corticosteroids may be used when necessary to control inflammation, although long-term use is generally discouraged. Physical therapy options include topical applications, sand-bath therapy, phototherapy (sunlight exposure), and steam therapy.
