Introduction
Tinnitus caused by the common cold primarily occurs in two scenarios. First, the common cold induces swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, leading to eustachian tube dysfunction, negative pressure in the middle ear cavity, and middle ear effusion—manifesting as symptoms of otitis media with effusion, including nasal congestion and conductive hearing loss; some patients may also experience tinnitus. Finally, patients are advised to rest adequately, ensure sufficient sleep, and maintain a relaxed mental state.

The common cold and tinnitus are both relatively common conditions; however, the co-occurrence of a cold and tinnitus as a combined clinical presentation is comparatively rare. So, what causes tinnitus associated with the common cold?

What Causes Tinnitus Associated with the Common Cold?

Tinnitus induced by the common cold primarily arises from two mechanisms. First, the cold can cause swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, leading to eustachian tube (auditory tube) dysfunction. This results in negative pressure within the middle ear cavity and subsequent middle ear effusion—manifesting clinically as secretory otitis media. Symptoms include nasal congestion, conductive hearing loss, and, in some patients, tinnitus.

Secondly, viral infection during a cold may spread to auditory-related nerves, triggering sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Patients may notice progressive hearing decline, accompanied by aural fullness, tinnitus, and—in severe cases—dizziness or vomiting. Therefore, if tinnitus develops following a cold, prompt medical evaluation at a hospital is essential, and treatment should be guided by a specialist’s diagnostic findings.

Finally, patients are advised to prioritize rest, ensure adequate sleep, maintain emotional relaxation, avoid excessive mental stress, and preserve overall psychological well-being. They should also avoid spicy foods, drink plenty of warm water, follow a light and balanced diet, consume fresh vegetables and fruits regularly, and engage in moderate physical exercise to enhance general fitness and immune resilience.
