What Are Yin Deficiency and Yang Deficiency?
Yin deficiency and yang deficiency are common syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); however, most people lack a clear understanding of these conditions and are unaware of their differences. Although yin and yang deficiencies typically do not cause overt or severe discomfort, they can significantly impair physical health and progressively weaken one’s constitution. So, what exactly are yin deficiency and yang deficiency?
What Are Yin Deficiency and Yang Deficiency?
Yin deficiency and yang deficiency refer to a reduction in the body’s yin fluids. This gradual depletion weakens the body’s moisturizing and nourishing functions, leading to symptoms such as spontaneous sweating of the hands and feet, dry mouth and tongue, and a sensation of heat in the palms, soles, and chest (“five-center heat”). Additional manifestations may include tidal fever, night sweats, dark yellow urine, and reduced urinary output. Some patients may also experience constipation and unintentional weight loss; thus, herbal formulas that nourish yin and supplement yang may be prescribed orally. During treatment, patients are advised to engage in moderate outdoor exercise to enhance their immune resistance and consume protein-rich foods.

Both yin deficiency and yang deficiency are TCM diagnostic patterns. Yin deficiency denotes an insufficiency of yin fluids, resulting in internal heat symptoms caused by relative yang excess (i.e., “deficient heat”). Yang deficiency refers to a state of diminished yang qi—characterized by functional decline or weakening across multiple physiological systems. Patients with yin deficiency tend to sweat easily, whereas those with yang deficiency often present with pallor and a feeble, thready pulse.

In daily life, patients should maintain a positive mental outlook, actively cooperate with their physicians during treatment, take prescribed medications regularly and in correct dosages, and pay close attention to routine self-care—thereby facilitating prompt improvement of their condition.
