Introduction
Whether watermelon can be consumed together with cold medicine depends on the type of cold the patient has. Colds are mainly classified into two types: wind-heat cold and wind-cold cold. If it is a wind-heat cold, eating a small amount of watermelon before or after taking medication is acceptable; however, it is not recommended for wind-cold cold. Watermelon is a cool and refreshing fruit. When suffering from a wind-heat cold, consuming watermelon can help replenish fluids and clear heat and toxins.

Whether watermelon can be consumed together with cold medicine depends on the type of cold the patient has, as common colds are mainly divided into two types: wind-heat cold and wind-cold cold. For wind-heat cold, it is acceptable to eat a small amount of watermelon before or after taking medication, but for wind-cold cold, eating watermelon is not recommended.

I. Wind-Heat Cold

1. Adjunct Treatment

Watermelon is a cool and refreshing fruit. Eating watermelon during a wind-heat cold can help replenish fluids and clear heat and toxins. Therefore, moderate consumption of watermelon may provide certain therapeutic benefits for patients with wind-heat cold.

2. Eliminating Unpleasant Taste

Some cold medicines have a strong bitter taste. After taking such medication, consuming a small amount of watermelon can help alleviate the bitterness in the mouth.

II. Wind-Cold Cold

Wind-cold cold results from exposure to cold, allowing external wind and cold pathogens to invade the body. Watermelon is considered a cold-natured food; consuming it before or after taking medication may reduce drug effectiveness or worsen the condition. Therefore, watermelon should not be eaten together with cold medicine.

After taking cold medicine, patients should avoid consuming any food immediately, as this might interfere with the medicine's efficacy. It is generally recommended to wait about 10 minutes after taking medication before eating watermelon, and even then, watermelon intake should be limited to avoid affecting treatment outcomes.

During a cold, patients should drink plenty of water, maintain a light diet, consume more fresh vegetables and fruits, obtain essential nutrients, and enhance immune function.
