What to do about a newborn's umbilical cord infection
When a newborn is found to have a umbilical cord infection, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly. Under a doctor's guidance, appropriate management methods—such as general care, medication, or surgical treatment—should be selected based on the severity of the infection.
1. General Care
If the infection symptoms are relatively mild and not severe, it is essential to keep the navel area dry and clean. Avoid contact with water, and change clothing regularly to prevent contamination of the navel, which could worsen the infection.
2. Medication
If the umbilical infection is more severe, follow a doctor’s instructions to first disinfect the navel area using hydrogen peroxide or povidone-iodine solution. Then, under medical guidance, apply topical antibiotics such as mupirocin ointment or erythromycin ointment for treatment.
3. Surgical Treatment
For patients with severe symptoms that do not respond well to medication, prompt medical evaluation is necessary. Depending on the individual case, surgical interventions such as hematoma evacuation or incision and drainage of the navel may be required to alleviate the infection.
