Can you drink milk when experiencing motion sickness?
You can drink milk when experiencing motion sickness, but it should be consumed in moderation.
Generally, motion sickness is caused by a conflict among sensory signals—such as what the eyes see, what the muscles feel, and the balance information from the inner ear. When the brain cannot reconcile these conflicting signals, dizziness and nausea may occur. In most cases, drinking a moderate amount of milk during motion sickness is acceptable. Milk contains not only abundant calcium but also protein, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, iodine, and other minerals, as well as nutrients like vitamins A, B2, and B12, which may help alleviate symptoms of motion sickness to some extent. However, if you are lactose intolerant, drinking milk may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea and vomiting, thereby worsening motion sickness symptoms. Additionally, milk intake should be controlled; consuming too much at once may also aggravate feelings of nausea and vomiting.
In general, it is recommended to take anti-motion sickness medication for prevention. Before boarding a vehicle, avoid eating greasy foods, and instead consume moderate amounts of acidic fruits with aromatic scents, such as oranges or tangerines. Also, choose seats that experience less vibration, ensure good ventilation, and take these measures to help reduce motion sickness symptoms.
