What to do about diarrhea caused by heat exposure in summer
Diarrhea due to heat exposure in summer should be managed according to its underlying cause. Common causes include consuming excessively cold food, abdominal chilling, and eating contaminated food.
1. Consuming Cold Food
If diarrhea results from drinking very cold beverages or eating raw, cold, or spicy foods that accelerate gastrointestinal motility, specific medical treatment is usually unnecessary. Simply adjusting the diet by avoiding raw and cold foods is sufficient. Applying a warm compress or gently massaging the abdomen may also help.
2. Abdominal Chilling
Diarrhea caused by a cold abdomen—such as from prolonged exposure to air conditioning without adequate abdominal warmth—can stimulate excessive intestinal movement. In such cases, raise the air conditioner temperature and wear more clothing to keep the abdomen warm. Under a doctor's guidance, antidiarrheal medications such as smectite powder (montmorillonite) or loperamide may be used.
3. Contaminated Food
If diarrhea is caused by ingesting spoiled or bacteria-contaminated food leading to bacterial infection of the intestines, antibiotic treatment may be necessary under medical supervision. Commonly prescribed antibiotics include ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin.
