What should I do if a newborn has a mild cold?
Mild colds in newborns can be improved through increased fluid intake, massage, and medication.
1. Drink more water
If the newborn only has symptoms such as runny nose and sneezing, with no effect on feeding and no change in body temperature, you may appropriately give some warm water to promote metabolism. Keeping the living environment well-ventilated also helps recovery from the cold.
2. Massage
Moderate massage of acupoints such as the temples, Yingxiang (LI20), and Yongquan (KI1) may help relieve symptoms of a mild cold in newborns. However, care should be taken not to apply excessive pressure to avoid discomfort.
3. Medication
For mild colds accompanied by nasal congestion, 1–2 drops of normal saline can be administered into the nostrils. Then gently massage the sides of the nostrils with the thumb and index finger. Afterwards, use sterile cotton swabs to clean out nasal secretions and clear the nasal cavity to improve symptoms.
If the newborn develops coughing or fever along with the cold, especially if breathing is affected, it is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation and appropriate treatment at a hospital.
