Is it normal to have yellow vaginal discharge after hysterectomy?
Yellow-colored vaginal discharge after a total hysterectomy is considered abnormal. Normally, vaginal discharge is milky white. Yellow discharge is often caused by irritation from vaginal inflammation, specifically as follows:
After hysterectomy, if the uterine incision has healed well without abdominal pain or fever, but there is slightly yellowish or foul-smelling vaginal discharge, it is usually due to vaginitis and routine secretion testing is recommended. If diagnosed with vaginitis, treatment with vaginal metronidazole suppositories or dual-zoletin suppositories should be conducted under a physician's guidance. In cases where local wound infection occurs after hysterectomy, the discharge may appear yellow with a fishy odor, accompanied by fever and abdominal pain; intravenous ceftriaxone may be administered for anti-infective treatment.
It is recommended that after hysterectomy, patients maintain good external genital hygiene and abstain from sexual intercourse to prevent reproductive tract infections and abnormal discharge. Additionally, maintaining a nutritious diet to enhance physical immunity can promote recovery.
