Can you drink alcohol if you have a muscle strain?
Alcohol should generally be avoided when suffering from a soft tissue injury.
A soft tissue injury may result from excessive physical strain, external force, cold exposure, or other factors that cause tearing of soft tissues or circulatory impairment, leading to an aseptic inflammation. Symptoms typically include local swelling, pain, bruising of the skin and soft tissues, and in severe cases, joint dysfunction or restricted movement. Alcohol consumption is usually not recommended after such an injury. This is mainly because the body's resistance decreases following the injury, and drinking alcohol may aggravate bleeding and swelling due to its irritating effects, thus hindering the healing of damaged tissues. Additionally, if there is an open wound, alcohol intake might increase the risk of infection.
After sustaining a soft tissue injury, patients should ensure adequate rest and avoid excessive physical activity. During recovery, it is advisable to consume nutrient-rich foods such as fish and bone soup to support nutritional needs. Under a doctor’s guidance, patients may also apply safflower oil to gently massage the affected area to promote healing.
