Does constipation make you more likely to gain weight?
Whether constipation easily leads to weight gain depends on individual circumstances and cannot be generalized.
Constipation is usually caused by insufficient water intake, poor bowel habits, or similar factors. It can affect overall metabolism and prevent proper waste elimination. Short-term constipation typically does not lead to weight gain. However, chronic constipation may cause feces to remain in the intestines for prolonged periods, resulting in repeated absorption of fats from stool. It may also contribute to hormonal imbalances that promote weight gain.
It is recommended to drink plenty of water and consume more fresh vegetables and fruits daily to enhance intestinal motility and reduce constipation. If constipation is severe, laxative or stool-softening medications may be used under medical guidance.
