Can eating walnuts cause constipation?
Eating walnuts does not normally cause constipation; however, consuming too many may lead to constipation.
Walnuts are rich in oils, vitamins, protein, dietary fiber, and minerals. The oil content helps lubricate the intestines, while the dietary fiber promotes gastrointestinal motility and facilitates bowel movements. Therefore, eating a moderate amount of walnuts not only prevents constipation but also helps prevent it and provides essential nutrients to the body. However, excessive daily consumption of walnuts may overburden the gastrointestinal tract, slow intestinal motility, impair normal digestion and absorption of food, and cause food to remain in the intestines for prolonged periods, potentially leading to constipation.
If constipation occurs, abdominal massage in a clockwise direction is recommended. When necessary, medication may be used under medical guidance. Additionally, constipation might also be caused by conditions such as hemorrhoids or anal fistula, so timely hospital visits for relevant examinations are needed to identify the specific cause and receive appropriate treatment.
