What causes diarrhea after taking enzymes?
Diarrhea usually refers to loose stools. Experiencing diarrhea after taking enzymes might be a normal phenomenon, but it could also result from pathological factors such as indigestion or gastroenteritis.
1. Normal Phenomenon
Enzyme supplements typically contain abundant dietary fiber, probiotics, and various digestive enzymes. After consumption, they may help soften stool and stimulate the gastrointestinal mucosa to enhance intestinal motility, thereby increasing both bowel movement frequency and water content in stool. This transient diarrhea is generally considered normal.
2. Disease-Related Factors
1) Indigestion
Taking excessive amounts of enzyme supplements may increase the digestive burden on the gastrointestinal tract and strongly irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, leading to indigestion and diarrhea.
2) Gastroenteritis
If enzyme products are improperly stored and become contaminated by bacteria or other pathogens, consuming them may allow pathogenic microorganisms to multiply rapidly in the gastrointestinal tract, damaging the mucosal lining and causing gastroenteritis and subsequent diarrhea.
In addition, individuals with pre-existing gastrointestinal ulcers may also experience diarrhea after taking enzyme supplements. It is recommended to actively follow medical advice and treat according to the underlying cause.
